Crystal Bay is the most reliable spot for both beginner snorkelers and big fish hunters. The bay is sheltered by two headlands, keeping water calmer than most of Penida’s south coast. Shallow areas inside the bay feature table corals, anemones, and clownfish in 2–4 meters. The main attraction is the cleaning station on a sandy slope at 10–15 meters. From July to October, Oceanic Mola Mola (sunfish) rise from the deep here. Strong swimming is required to hover at depth and wait.
Current checks happen every morning at 6 AM. If the current runs east to west, trips go early before the surge pushes snorkelers onto rocks. No fins means no deep side — stick to the coral garden.
Current risk Moderate to strong during outgoing tide
Rule No touching the sandy bottom — kills coral larvae
Best for Mola Mola (Jul–Oct) + vibrant hard corals
Manta Bay is not a guarantee. This is a small opening on the southwest coast where manta rays feed when current pushes plankton against rocks. Trips run only on a rising tide with a southwesterly swell under 1.5 meters. Visibility can drop to 5 meters when plankton is thick — that is exactly when mantas show up. Rays are 2–4 meters wide, wild, and cannot be touched.
Boats position 50 meters off the reef edge. Snorkelers drift back toward the bay mouth. Staying still makes mantas circle. Chasing makes them leave. No reef here — only boulders and surge. Life vests are required for all swimmers because surge can slam bodies against rocks on exit.
Best months May to November (dry season)
Alternative If Manta Bay is flat → Manta Point (deeper, longer boat ride)
⚠️ Mandatory Life vest + no chasing
Gamat Bay has no beach, only a rocky drop-off. That is why crowds avoid it. This spot is best for macro life and hard coral cover. The bay faces northeast, protected from prevailing south swells. Boats anchor in 6 meters. Snorkelers step directly onto a slope of massive porites coral heads as large as cars. No sand, no surge, clear water. The 4-meter contour route reveals leaf scorpionfish, octopus, and pairs of moorish idols.
Current is almost always manageable (under 0.5 knots). The catch: a shallow reef table at the bay entrance breaks during low tide. Trips schedule Gamat only two hours either side of high tide. Depth range is 2–12 meters. Sea urchins are present in shallows — reef shoes are mandatory.
Depth 2–12 m
Critical Entry only near high tide (±2h)
Gear needed Reef shoes (urchins)
Toyapakeh is a drift-only spot. Entry happens at the north point. Current pulls snorkelers along a wall for 20–25 minutes. The wall drops from 3 meters to over 40 meters, covered in sea fans, whip corals, and barrel sponges. Turtles appear on every trip — green turtles and hawksbills resting under overhangs or chewing sponge.
A second boat is positioned down-current as a catcher. This is not a stop-and-look site. Snorkelers must keep heads down and let the reef move past. Best action is in the top 5 meters where sunlight hits soft corals. If current exceeds 1 knot, beginners are redirected to Crystal Bay instead. Toyapakeh requires confident fin work and a comfortable face-in position.
Entry Roll backward → clear mask → drift immediately
Gear Short fins to avoid kicking coral
Condition Strong swimming required
Wall Point is for experienced snorkelers only. Current is unpredictable. Water temperature can drop to 21°C. No shallow reef exists to grab. The structure is a submerged ridge dropping to 50+ meters on both sides. Entry timing is critical — only when current switches from flood to ebb. Snorkelers drift over a plateau at 8 meters, then the wall falls into open blue.
Sightings include giant trevally hunting fusiliers, schools of barracuda, and reef sharks cruising the drop-off. If the thermocline lifts, mola mola can appear outside normal season. Ability to equalize to at least 5 meters and swim against light current to rejoin the boat is mandatory. Drift duration is 15 minutes maximum.
Requirement Signed waiver + buddy system
Must have Equalize to 5m & swim against current
⚠️ Risk Panic breathing is real here even for snorkelers
Drift time 15 min max → boat pick-up
